Confirmation

Confirmation Programme: St Peter's Way

Confirmation will take place in the afternoon on Pentecost Sunday 19th May 2024 in the afternoon

St Peter's Way: Preparing for Confirmation
Our Confirmation programme is based on the life of St Peter.  We use the stained glass windows in the Cathedral to think about the:
  • sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation
  • sacrament of Reconciliation - remembering how Peter was forgiven after he denied Jesus
  • first Counsel of the Church, the role of Pope and the Magisterium of the Church
  • miracles of Jesus and the Bible
  • challenges of responding to Jesus' call to follow him and how we ask the Saints and Martyrs to help and inspire us in our daily life

Enrolling on the programme is the first step to finding out more and helping young people to think about how they will respond to Jesus' call to Follow me.  At the end of the programme they will be invited to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.  Before being anointed with Chrism and receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit they will renew their Baptismal promises, for most young people, these will have been made on their behalf by their parents and Godparents. In this final sacrament of initiation they make these promises for themselves.

    Parents and Carers
There will be some sessions to support parents / carers to reflect on their faith journey and sessions for adults. These will provide an opportunity for parents to meet to reflect on the sacrament of confirmation, the Mass, traditional prayers such as the Our Father or the Catechism. There will also be materials shared on our Parish Blog.

    Catechism of the Catholic Church
This is a book which explains Church teaching.  The Catechism says that:
CCC 1298 When Confirmation is celebrated separately from Baptism, as is the case in the Roman Rite, the Liturgy of Confirmation begins with the renewal of baptismal promises and the profession of faith by the confirmandi. This clearly shows that Confirmation follows Baptism. When adults are baptized, they immediately receive Confirmation and participate in the Eucharist.

Please pray for all our young people preparing for this sacrament.

All parish activities involving young people are delivered by adults with DBS clearance.

Our Confirmation programme will be open to young people in years 7 to 9 and their parents / carers.  For older young people or adults we will make arrangements based on those expressing an interest in being confirmed.
